Abstract : Waveguide bends are essential elements in the design of integrated optical devices. Various bend configurations have been studied mostly for titanium-indiffused lithium niobate waveguides.Among them, S-shaped bends have been widely used in integrated optical devices. The main goal of waveguide bend studies has been to achieve the minimum transition length that can be tolerated for acceptably low bend loss. Losses as low as 0.2 dB have been reported in titanium-indiffused waveguides for a transition between off set parallel waveguides with a 0.1 mm lateral and 3.25 mm longitudinal separation. Here we report on very-low-loss PE:LiNbO3 waveguide bend structures at lambda = 1.55 micrometers.
