Abstract : Fatty amino acids are alpha-amino acids with a linear or branched alkyl side chain. Of interest is the use of fatty amino acids monomers and oligomers as conjugating units for biologically active compounds. The conjugates formed would be expected to possess a degree of lipid- or membrane-like character and this feature will enhance the passage of poorly adsorbed drugs across biological membranes. The linkage between the drug and the lipidic unit may either be biologically stable or possess predictable biological or chemical instability.
