Abstract : Various amphiphilic peptides including mastoparan and substance P (SP) catalyze the activation of GTP-binding regulatory proteins (G proteins). The mechanism of the activation has been studied most intensively in the case of mastoparan, and it has been shown that mastoparan activities G proteins by a mechanism similar to that used by G protein- coupled receptors. Mastoparans are known to cause secretion from various types of cells, including histamine from mast cells, and to cause a transient increase of intracellular Ca(2+).
