Abstract : Frequency shifts in Rossby wave propagation due to nonlinear interactions in geostrophic (beta-plane) turbulence are studied by direct numerical simulations and a statistical closure theory. The shifts are of systematic sign and can be quite large as compared with the linear Rossby frequency. Under certain conditions, the closure equations yield a simple approximation for the shifts. An explanation of the shifts is given by a model that includes oscillating random sweeping and strain of large eddies.
