Abstract : Tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin coming from a fish (fugu) and a sea dynoflagelate (alexandrium) are pharmacological tools for studying Na+ potential-dependant channels; u-conotoxin from a sea-snail shell is a short peptide (22 AA) and therefore could cross some anatomical barriers when administered by respiratory route. In such case, this toxin could eventually represent a threat. In this study, binding parameters of the three toxins were determined on rat brain homogenates and slices by autoradiography and image analysis. Some results on the toxin capability to cross respiratory system and blood brain barrier will also be presented.
