Title :   Inflammatory Cell Types and Cytokines in Monkey Lungs Following Exposure to Aerosolized Staphylococcus Enterotoxin B.

Abstract : Frozen lung sections from Rhesus monkeys aerosolized with Staphylococcus enterotoxin B (SEB) and a control group from non-SEB protocols were examined for their distribution of a variety of inflammatory cell types and cytokines using immunohistochemical techniques. Lungs from SEB-dosed monkeys showed moderate increases in the numbers of CD8+ and CD4+ T cells as well. as CD68+ mononuclear cells in the alveolar septa. CD68+ macrophages also increased slightly in the alveoli. Endogenous peroxidase positive granulocytes were occasionally present in perivascular and peribronchiolar locations. These changes were accompanied by increased numbers of HLA-DR, TNF and IFN-gamma antigen expressing cells. Furthermore, HLA-DR, ICAM-l(CD54) and ELAM-1 antigens were upregulated on endothelial cells. These results, in conjunction with published data suggest that the lung lesions of SEB toxicosis are modulated, at least in part, by complex interactions between activated macrophages, T cells, endothelial cells and their products, including TNF,IFN-gamma, HLA-DR, IlCAM-1 and ELAM-1.
