Abstract : In order to investigate the 3-D hydraulic behaviour of a serpentine chlorine contact tank model, turbulence measurements were undertaken using a two-component laser Doppler anemometer (LDA). A detailed examination of turbulent parameters (mean velocities, intensities, Reynolds stresses and correlation coefficients) demonstrates how complex the flow in a contact tank (CT) can be, and shows the offsets of the baffles' lee and the tank's inlet and outlet on the CT's hydraulic efficiency. The results presented herein are relevant to the understanding of the mechanisms of mixing and transport of disinfectant chlorine in the tank. (Author)
