Abstract : Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used for measuring the velocity of suspended solid and gaseous particles in the model of a three phase reactor. The mean size of the solid and the gaseous particles (bubbles) differes by more than one order in magnitude. The measuring system can distinguish between small and big particles, and it can therefore provide information ont he concentration of the solid and the gaseous phase. The ambiguity in the sign of the measured velocity vectors is resolved by moving, the recording camera at constant speed. Regimes of recirculating flow are visualized by a chemical time reaction.
