Abstract : Vorticity measurements with the Vorticity Optical Probe in the turbulent Taylor vortex regime of Couette-Taylor Flow are described. Preliminary data near the outer boundary (y/g=0.1) at Reynolds numbers above and below a skin friction scaling transition at R approx. 1000) suggest that this transition occurs when vortical filaments can no longer be organized and contained by the Taylor vortex cells. Turbulent vorticity fluctuations appear to exceeded the local mean vorticity (near the outer wall), thereby transitioning from Taylor vortex flow-dominated momentum transport to turbulence-dominated transport.
