Abstract : Two variants of the phase Doppler technique are described and experimental data are presented to validate their performance. A planar phase Doppler system is shown to be advantageous in simultaneous measurement of velocity and diameter of spherical particles smaller than 10 microns. Furthermore, the planar arrangement is demonstrated to be the appropriate choice for simultaneous measurements of lateral vibrations and instantaneous diameter of glass fibers during the drawing process. The second optical system employs cylindrical waves of laser light instead of plane waves in the measuring volume. In this system, only frequencies (and not the phases) of signals are needed signal processing is simplified and the difficulties associated with the 2x ambiguity of the phase Doppler technique are obviated. A two-color optical system is described and its operating principle is verified using monosize liquid drops with diameters in the range 50-120 micrometers
