Abstract : This paper presents a new technique to simultaneously measure particle size and velocity in applications characterized by a large size range and high particle concentration. The physical principle of the technique is described based on the detection of scattered refraction and reflection peaks which sweep past a detector at different times as a particle traverse a narrow probe volume. An analytical description of this phenomena is presented which relates the time separating the reflection and refraction peaks to the velocity and diameter of the particle. Lastly, the results of experimental studies using water droplets and glass microspheres are presented and discussed.(Author)
