Abstract : The thermal convection in liquid hexane is studied by LDV in a vertical slot of aspect ratio 28. The vertical velocity component is measured point by point along the horizontal median of the cell and the profiles are successfully compared to 2D numerical simulations. The study provides an experimental validation for the analytical velocity profile at small Rayleigh number Ra, indicates no major 3D effect, suggests a continuous transition to a boundary layer regime for Ra greater than 30000 and an instability at Ra=100000 with a transition to a multicellular regime via a transient oscillatory state (Author)
