Abstract : Measurements of gas velocity have been obtained in a firing gas-fuelled engine by laser-Doppler velocimetry as a function of crank angle and correlated with pressure and the signals from ionisation gauges. The engines was operated at 1000 rpm with part load and with sequences of five firing and nine non-firing cycles so that it was possible to examine the cyclic variability associated with nonfiring, rich and lean burn. The results show smaller variability than did previous results with liquid fuel that lean burn is associated with large variability than is stoichiometric burning and that the flame front is associated with increases in fluctuation levels which remain to be explained (Author)
