Abstract : The Scalar Dissipation rates have been measured in the developing near fields of three different propane-air turbulent shear layers where lifted flames would be stabilized. Rayleigh imaging was employed to quantify instantaneous propane concentration at various locations, in the near fields of these free shear flows. The measurements resolve the dynamic range of the turbulent spectrum including the Kolmogorov and Batchelor scales except at the injector exit where these scales are not fully resolved. Quantitative instantaneous Rayleigh signatures of the propane concentration and computed instantaneous scalar dissipation rates as well as mean scalar dissipation profiles are determined. (Author)
