Abstract : The second order drift component of the velocity field under progressive water waves is the subject of this experimental work. It is an Eulerian representation of the mass transport phenomenon in water wave. In the present study the primary attention was paid to the distribution of this velocity component in the bottom boundary layer where a strong wave-induced drift current in the direction of wave propagation has been predicted previously. Measurements for two characteristics waves were made using LDV and PIV measuring techniques in two closed wave tanks of different size. In the analysis of the experimental data the drift component of the velocity field at each measuring distance from the bottom was not considered as a time-averaged quantity but as a low-frequency part of the wave motion which varies only slowly with the time and can be decomposed by means of a Kalman-Bucy processor.
